All Along the Watchtower
Guiding Clients through the Confusion and Turmoil Facing the
Modern Music Industry
New York State Bar Association’s Entertainment Arts & Sports Law (EASL) Section to Present the 3rd Annual Music Business Law Seminar at
CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival 2008
The Entertainment Arts & Sports Law (EASL) Section of The New York State Bar Association, in association with CMJ Network, Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP and Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP, will once again host the all-day MCLE accredited Music Business Law Seminar on October 24, 2008, to be held at this year’s CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival at New York University in New York City, from October 21-25, 2008. The venue for the Seminar will be NYU’s Helen and Martin Kimmel Center for University Life, Richard L. Rosenthal Pavilion.
The music industry continues to evolve in the wake of declining sales of physical product, innovative digital uses, general economic malaise and the need to monetize the ever increasing consumption of music content.
This evolution has led to the development of new business models and forced industry professionals to look for new sources of revenue and re-evaluate their assumptions about doing deals in the music business. In addition, the chaos surrounding this evolution and our current economic climate have created opportunities to launch new ventures, acquire new assets and shed obligations that have dragged promising companies into the mire of economic distress.
In this era of upheaval, it is more important than ever for attorneys in private practice and in-house and media companies to stay current with new legal developments.
The Music Business Law Seminar will feature speakers at the center of the industry discussing critical legal topics affecting the future of the music business. Topics will cover the current major legal and legislative issues related to digital music royalties, licensing music on social networking sites, bankruptcy involving music companies, ethics issues, international music deals and the latest business models in the music industry.
Lawyers attending the seminar will receive 6 New York State MCLE (Mandatory Continuing Legal Education) credits, consisting of 5 in Practice Management and 1 in Ethics which may also be accepted in other jurisdictions.
There has never been a greater need for clarity into the future state of the music industry. This seminar will offer insight into a wide range of critical topics that are more relevant than ever for lawyers to understand to advise their music industry clients.

What is Home by 9?
It is revolutionizing the way we think about the live music experience: unwind from a long day at the office with amazing music and still be home by 9. Sound too good to be true? It’s not.
Zenbu Media is proud to present a new concert series specifically tailored to fit your busy lifestyle. Home by 9 is an exciting new concept that features live music and amazing food at Blue Water Grill’s lush Jazz Room. Here’s the best part: doors open at 5:30, show and dinner start at 6 p.m. It’s over by 8. You’re home by 9. Come straight from the office, enjoy dinner and drinks and get lost in the music. You’ll still have time for your family and you’ll be fresh for work the next morning.
Music is an essential part of life. You’ve gone too long without it being part of your routine. We’re bringing it back into your schedule.
Revitalize your soul. Return to your roots.
And still be home by 9.

A Must See!
Joyce is so excited for this documentary film. The Wetlands was a special and historical place – a place for music and activism – and a place for die-hard fans to see the bands that they loved and changed their lives forever.
She cleared all the music (+ more), which was recorded live at the Wetlands venue. Working with Dean Budnick, the director of the film, and Peter Shapiro, a producer of the film, was an absolute joy!
About the film:
Wetlands. For many the name evokes a spirit, a community, an ethos. People still rave about the time they first encountered the Dave Matthews Band, Blues Traveler, Phish or Pearl Jam at the legendary New York City rock club. Others never visited, but have seen the signature Wetlands bus in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, or have listened to the celebrated live recordings that originated from the club’s intimate stage. Still others participated in Wetlands’ working groups for social and environmental advocacy and remain tethered to its influential Activism Center.
Wetlands Preserved shares the accounts of staffers, musicians and clubgoers in relating the venue’s development. Indeed, while there is no single story of Wetlands Preserve, the film presents many facets, many arcs, encompassing: a New York story, a diary of a rock club, an independent perspective of the concert industry, a look at social activism efforts and an account of grassroots music thriving in a supportive environment, as Wetlands became a true Preserve.

A must see!
U2 3D is a unique cinematic experience that puts viewers within the pulsing energy of a stadium concert given by the world’s most popular band. Marrying innovative digital 3D imagery and 5.1 Surround Sound with the excitement of a live U2 concert – shot in South America during the final leg of their “Vertigo” tour – it creates an immersive theatrical experience unlike any 3D or concert film that has come before. U2 3D takes viewers on an extraordinary journey they will never forget.
Even though Joyce is an avid U2 fan, this film is even more important to her, because one of her clients, visionary Peter Shapiro, is a producer of this first-ever 3D digital concert firm.
